Philosophy/Program: Daily activities are sports related and will include instruction stressing individual skill, proper execution, exposure to new events, and lifetime fitness and recreation. Primary within this context will be an emphasis on sportsmanship and teamwork as part of participation. Children will be placed in groups of like-ages so that competitive equity and safety are maintained at all times.
Staff: The administrative staff is comprised of the senior Athletics, Recreation and PE Staff at Soka University. They will handle all aspects of training the SURF counselors and will supervise all activities each day.
Our counselors are College-age student-athletes who have expressed interests in coaching and teaching as careers. They have also received training in fostering our philosophy as part of each session, and are First Aid and CPR certified.
Facilities: Our new 10 acre complex includes multiple outdoor fields, a track and field complex, indoor soccer, basketball, volleyball, badminton and (3) racquetball courts, a 50-meter pool, (6) tennis courts, outdoor soccer, flag football and all equipment necessary for your child to learn new skills in games they already play, as well as new rules and skills in games new to them and their friends.
The SURF All-Sports Camp features fun-filled days with friends and new experiences. Campers are grouped by age (7-9 & 10-12) for sports-specific instruction and play with our energetic staff. Soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis, flag football, ultimate Frisbee, track, kickball, inner tube water polo and many other sports will be taught, played and supervised over the course of each week.
The curriculum exposes children to a wide variety of sports and recreational activities in the same facilities used by the Soka Lions athletic teams. Although our counselors will guide children through the lessons they learn, some sports will be introduced and taught by respected club, college and professional coaches from the most elite levels of competition. We will maintain a 10:1 child-to-staff ratio, and the Camp Director will be with the groups all day.
An additional highlight in each week of camp will be an in-house activity.
